Bone Density Testing (DEXA Scan)
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is used to measure bone mineral density, or BMD. A DEXA scan is typically used to diagnose osteoporosis. Radiation exposure is realtively low and the scan is easy to perfrom. Scanning generally takes between 10 and 20 minutes to perform and is painless.
We recommend that women over age 65 and men over age 70 have a DEXA scan. Additionally, postmenopausal women under 65 years who have risk factors for osteoporosis other than menopause (these include a previous history of fractures, low body weight, cigarette smoking, and a family history of fractures) should be tested
